How to fix files corrupted by shortcut virus
Shortcut virus are virus that infect your files and folders and make them hidden and inaccessible until they become corrupted and unusable. this article hope to take you step by step on how to removing files corrupted by shortcut virus
Shortcut virus are very dangerous as they, if infected, hide all important files and folders from your drives (hard drive, memory cards, pen-drive etc) leaving you with only shortcut replicas of all affected files.
There are two types of shortcut virus:
(a) Flashdrive shortcut virus: A Trojan which consolidates every file in your removable drive and puts everything into one hidden shortcut file mostly carrying the name and size of the device:
(b) Files and Folders shortcut virus: These are Trojan and Worm which when opened will start duplicating itself and installig malicious software (malwares) that either monitors or steals important (datas, credit card information, password) from your computer.
The sad thing is that there are only few antivirus that can detect these shortcut virus and even at that most of them either delete or quarantine the affected files.
Here are simple procedure that you can use to remove the shortcut virus and repair the affected files and folders:
(STEP1) Go to My computer and Right click on the affected drive, then select explore (Warning: Do not open the drive directly by double-clicking) or type the drive letter in the windows address bar so as not to run a script. If the files are already hidden, continue with STEP 2 and 3, if not SKIP to STEP 4.
(STEP2) Go to your computer’s control panel and open folders.
In the “Folders Option” dialogue box, click on the “View tab”. Select “Show hidden files, folders and drives” and also make sure “Hide extension for know files” and “Hide protected operating system files” are unchecked.
(STEP3) Right click your hidden file or folder and select “Properties”. under the “General” tab, uncheck the hidden box and click OK
(STEP4) Next download the “Trojorm Removal Tool and Shortcut Virus fixFolder“.
(STEP5) Extract them and copy “Trojorm Removal Tool” into the affected drive and run it from there and make sure the scan is complete.
(STEP6) Copy the “Shortcut Virus fixFolder” into the affected drive. Right click and choose “open with” and select “notepad”.
Locate cDrive=”H” and change the drive letter as appropriately. “Save” the file and close. Now right click on the “Shortcut Virus fixFolder” and choose “open with” selecting “Windows Based Script Host” this time around, upon completion, the files will be restore to the normal types
(STEP1) Click start and type “CMD” into the search box, right click on “cmd.exe and select “Run as administrator”
(STEP2) in the comand prompt dialogue box type “attrib -h -r -s /s /d h:\*.*” (h: being your drive letter) and press enter, and thats it.
In case you get any “access denied error”, check very well to see if the command and drive letter are as exact as yours.
I will always advice that you have a USB Security software (e.g. USB Disk Security or SmadAV) installed and activated on your system and make sure you always or allow your security software scan any external drive before usage. And of course have a fully up-to-date antivirus software. Be kind to share this and also leave us a comment in the comment section.
